Race legend Carroll Shelby narrates his own
story on Ford's
"Shelby goes racing
with Ford"
video, as he moved up from hot-rodding to LeMans winner--and then to
designing and building his own cars. Behind the wheel of one of his 289
Cobras he drives you into his plant where he builds the Shelby Mustang
GT350 and the fabulous Ford GT40. In the "Shelby Goes Racing with
Ford" segment Carroll recounts his story from his early Terlingua
(Texas) racing days through winning (along with co-driver Roy Salvadori)
the 1959 LeMans 24-hour race, to the development of the Cobra roadsters
and coupes, then his Fomoco commission to develop the GT cars (the GT40
MkI, GT40 MkII and GT40 MkIV) and the Shelby Mustang GT350s (Ford filmed
this production before the GT500s were even a twinkle in ol' Carroll's
eye). You're taken out on the track to see his cars race; you're treated
to shots and glimpses of such road-racing and NASCAR icons as Ken Miles,
Stirling Moss, Rick Muther, A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, Freddy Lorenzen
and others. Various film footage is provided of (1965) Sebring 12-hour
race, Elkhart Lake, LeMans and (the 1965) Daytona Continental 2000 km
race, where (the late) Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby took top prize in a
GT40. There's even footage of action at Willow Springs (California),
where Shelby American did much of its Cobra, GT40 and Shelby Mustang
testing in the '60s. Bruce McLaren spends several minutes discussing the
GT40 MkII... then he proceeds to take you out on a road course with a
camera behind the windscreen. |
